Meet the founder
Cherrise Walker-Betts is the president & founder of Our Curls, Inc. She has trail blazed the path of providing unique and necessary services for women of color with cancer in her community all while being in the fight of her life with the contender, breast cancer. Her Compassion and empowering others shines forth in her work with families for over 15 years since earning her Bachelors in Social Work from D’Youville College in 2001. Her supervisors and co-workers deemed her the “guru” of community resources. She is fierce in her devotion to research all means for the betterment of the clients she serves. Her extensive knowledge of the human service system proves to be an asset when working with cancer patients in securing services that will benefit socially, emotionally and financially. Being entrepreneurial minded she received her MBA from the University of Phoenix in 2012.
Embracing values such as integrity, respect, optimism, commitment, innovation and holding others in high esteem Cherrise has earned great favor among her peers, family and clients she assists. Endowed with these positive character traits she has been found to be trustworthy and competent to get the job at hand done. Having irresistible charm and bubbly nature, Cherrise’s personality is magnetic and engaging.
In July of 2014 Cherrise was diagnosed with breast cancer and was thrust into the fight of her life. Her treatment consisted of chemotherapy, double mastectomy, complete hysterectomy, radiation and other surgeries to come. In the midst of her own battle she mustered up the strength to champion for other cancer patients and started the non-profit organization Curls in November 2014 and incorporated as Our Curls, Inc. in March 2015. All the services provided is to fill deficient services available specifically to women of color with cancer: free ethnic wigs, free wig trimming, free makeover sessions, support groups, support for caregivers, referrals to programs and services available to cancer patients and more.
As a result of her dedication to the cause she has received the “Superwoman of the year award” from For our daughters, Inc. in 2016 and the “Community Service Award” from New Hope Baptist MLK scholarship committee in 2017. In addition to her work with Our Curls, Inc. she volunteers on the patient and family advisory council at Buffalo General Hospital(PFAC). Cherrise is committed to preserving her community and the pride of her ancestors.
